Local real estate developer Dick Gushman is donating $100,000 to Hawaii Public Radio in exchange for $1 million Hawaiian Airlines frequent flier miles that he is gifting to Kapi’olani Medical Center.

The hospital said Monday it will use the money to fly neighbor island children to and from Honolulu when they need specialized care.

Gushman’s donation is capitalizing on HPR sponsor Hawaiian Airlines’ incentive for listeners to provide 10 HawaiianMiles for every dollar pledged, with a minimum pledge of $120.

HPR, which called Gushman’s pledge one of the largest individual donations in its 32-year history, raises about 65 percent of its $4.2 million operating budget from individual donations.
