A brush fire has destroyed more than 400 acres on military property on the North Shore since it began 10 days ago in a remote impact area at Schofield Barracks.

Four helicopters, two Army UH-60 Blackhawks, one Marine CH-53 Sea Stallion, and one civilian, were airborne with water buckets when a hot spot flared up early this morning, the Army reported.

The burn area is located on Army property and a portion of Dole property in an area inaccessible to firefighters on the ground due to safety and complex terrain.

 Army fire crews were focusing firefighting efforts on the perimeter to keep the fire from spreading.

So far, no threatened and endangered species have been affected, the Army said.

The fire started Tuesday at a training range on Schofield Barracks due to the rekindling of a fire in the same area, Oct. 15, that was 100 percent contained Sunday. Dennis Drake, Schofield’s public affairs officer, said the fire was due to ordnance detonation on the training range.
