Kaahumanu Elementary School to reopen after crash knocks out water service

A mini-van hit a water valve at Kaahumanu Elementary School in Makiki this morning.

Queen Kaahumanu Elementary School will reopen Thursday after being closed Wednesday when a minivan struck an above-ground water valve on Beretania Street, knocking out water service to the school.

State Department of Education officials said that repairs were completed this afternoon.

The Board Water Supply said the accident happened at 1:54 a.m. Because the backup control valve is on school property, a DOE crew conducted the repair work, said school principal Chris Daly.

The pipe had to be dug up and replaced, Daly said.

DOE officials decided to close the school at 6 a.m. and used an automated phone system to notify parents.

School officials also went to campus to let anyone dropping off children know what happened, Daly said.

About 600 students from pre-kindergarten to fifth grade attend the school.
