Rescue crews searching for missing North Shore surfer
The Coast Guard, Honolulu Fire Department and Ocean Safety Division are searching for a missing surfer south of Waimea Bay.
The surfer, Kirk Passmore of Haleiwa, was last seen Wednesday at about 11:00 a.m., surfing at the spot known as "Leftovers" near Haleiwa. He was wearing black board shorts and no shirt. He has red hair and in his early 30s. Passmore’s surfboard was located onshore, the Coast Guard said.
Coast Guard launched a helicopter at noon, and a cutter was diverted at 2 p.m. to assist in the search. The Fire Department and Ocean Safety are also searching using air, land and ocean assets.
Any sightings should be reported to local authorities or to the Coast Guard at 842-2600 or on VHF channel 16.
A high surf warning is in effect for northern and eastern shores of Oahu, Maui, Molokai, Hawaii island and Kauai County until 6 p.m. Thursday, National Weather Service forecasters said.
