Norovirus may have caused dozens to fall ill in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS >> Health officials say a norovirus may be the cause of an outbreak that has affected dozens of players, coaches and parents taking part in a youth football tournament in Las Vegas.

Southern Nevada Health District spokesman Jorge Viote says his agency is interviewing the sick and taking samples from them as part of an investigation to pinpoint the cause of the outbreak.

But he says the flu-like symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea are consistent with cases of norovirus, a mostly food- or water-borne illness.

He was unsure how many people have fallen ill, but KSNV-TV in Las Vegas reports about 100 people have developed flu-like symptoms.

Tournament spokesman Justin Gates told the station that at least nine of 100 teams participating in the National Youth Football Championships have been affected. The four-day tournament ends Saturday.

He didn’t immediately return phone calls to The Associated Press on Saturday.
