Hawaii County firefighters recover body from ocean near Kapaau
Hawaii County fire personnel recovered the body of a 79-year-old Kohala man Monday morning in the ocean off the North Kohala Coast.
Fire officials said the man’s body was reported about 11:20 a.m. and was seen floating face down in waters near Old Halaula Lighthouse Road in Kapaau.
Fire crews, Coast Guard and police responded.
Two fire helicopters were used to recover the body, which was found 200 yards offshore, fire officials said. His family was at the scene, a fire official said.
A medic unit met the helicopter at Kamehameha Park, and transported the body to the Kohala Hospital.
The cause of death remained undetermined Monday, but fire officials said the man may have drowned.
