An unidentified motorist died Sunday morning on Kauai after he veered off the roadway, hit a tree and then fell roughly 30 feet down an embankment.

A motorcyclist who was in the area of Wailua Homesteads at about 8:30 a.m. said he heard cries for help coming from the embankment and went to check, Kauai County said by email. The motorist, who was alive at the time, told the motorcyclist that he had been stuck in his vehicle for several hours.

The motorcyclist went to where he was able to get cell phone reception and notified authorities. When he returned, he called out to the man, but there was no response.

Firefighters from the Kapaa station rappelled down to the scene and found that the driver had died. The wreck was removed with the help of a tow truck.

Rescue specialists also responded and lent a hand.

Police closed Kuamoo Road/Loop Road for four hours for the extrication and investigation.
