The large warning-level surf that rolled into north-facing shores across the state over the weekend has, at least temporarily, subsided as a high surf advisory remains in effect for some islands.

The advisory covers the north- and west-facing shores of Oahu, Kauai, Molokai, Niihau and the north shore of Maui and is in effect until 6 a.m. Tuesday. Surf could reach up to 10 to 15 feet along north-facing shores and 8 to 12 feet along west-facing shores, according to officials at the National Weather Service.

A new, large swell, perhaps the biggest in years, is forecast to arrive either Tuesday through or Wednesday, bringing more warning-level waves.

Weather officials advise beachgoers to expect strong breaking waves, shore break and longshore and rip currents creating hazardous swimming conditions.
