UH basketball team routs UC Davis

An explosive effort by the Hawaii starting five carried the Rainbow Warriors to a 90-73 win at UC Davis tonight, snapping a five-game Big West road losing streak dating back to last season.

The first five for UH (13-5, 2-2 BWC) accounted for 87 of the team’s points. Christian Standhardinger led the way with 22 points and 10 rebounds in the win. Isaac Fotu scored 20, Garrett Nevels put in 16, Brandon Spearman added 15 points and point guard Keith Shamburger chipped in 14.

A deep 3-pointer by Shamburger with just over a minute left made it 90-67, putting the finishing touches on the lopsided win which avenged a 24-point loss at Davis’ arena, The Pavilion, last season.

The ‘Bows shot 58.2 percent from the field and 82.6 percent from the free throw line, while committing just nine turnovers. UCD (6-14, 1-4) made 10 3-pointers, but five of them came in the game’s first few minutes. UH took control from there.

UH built upon its 11-point halftime lead and went up 20, 65-45, with 13 minutes to play.

The Aggies converted consecutive 3-pointers to get within 67-54 with under 10 minutes to go. Nevels ended the run with a pull-up jumper.

Forward Ziggy Nujic hit a 3 for Davis to make it a 10-point game, then converted a three-point play to make it 71-62 with six minutes to play.

Consecutive baskets by Fotu and a 3-pointer by Nevels ended that threat, pushing the lead to 80-64 with four minutes remaining.

After UCD was called for traveling with less than five seconds remaining in the first half, Shamburger took an inbounds pass and dribbled upcourt for a pull-up 26-foot 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer for a 45-34 lead.

UH continues play at first-place UC Irvine (13-7, 4-0) on Saturday.
