The Coast Guard is asking the public’s assistance in identifying the owner of an unmanned kayak found adrift three miles northwest of Maui’s Honolua Bay on Saturday.
A cruise ship spotted the blue kayak adrift around 10 p.m..
While no one has been reported missing or in distress in the area, the Coast Guard conducted a search with a MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew to make sure that no one was in distress.
The Coast Guard advices the public to register and label all watercraft and equipment with contact information. Free “If Found” decals, which can be attached to watercraft and equipment, are offered via the Coast Guard’s Operation Paddle Smart and are available at local harbormasters, through the Coast Guard Auxiliary, and from Honolulu Sail and Power Squadron offices and select retail stores.
Anyone who can help identify the owner of the kayak is asked to call the Coast Guard Sector Honolulu Command Center at 842-2600.
