Wahine hoops team routed to end regular season

The Hawaii women’s basketball team was unable to conclude the 2013-14 regular season on a winning note as the Rainbow Wahine fell 61-42 at Cal State Fullerton on Saturday.

UH (16-12, 10-6 Big West) learned before tipoff it will receive the No. 3 seed in next week’s conference tournament regardless of the outcome against the Highlanders (12-16, 8-8).

Senior forward Kamilah Jackson, UH’s top scorer and rebounder, missed her sixth straight game with a sprained right foot. The Wahine won four out of the last five without her but were unable to muster much this time on a tough two-day turnaround coming off a 13-point win on senior night at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Senior guard Sydney Haydel led the way with 10 points.

UH trimmed a 19-point deficit at the start of the second half to 12, but the margin grew to 27 as the Titans were better in all facets.

Chante Miles and Alex Thomas scored a combined 44 points for the Titans, while UH was held to season-low in points while shooting 29 percent from the field. UH trailed 31-15 at halftime.

UH opens the Big West tournament on Wednesday at Long Beach State’s Walter Pyramid against an opponent to be determined.
