A 31-year-old Ewa Beach man has been charged with allegedly assaulting a police officer who was trying to arrest him for speeding and driving a stolen car.

Darryl Higgins was arrested for first-degree attempted murder, resisting arrest and auto theft Tuesday.

However, prosecutors reduced the charges to first-degree attempted assault and assault on a law enforcement officer. He also was charged with auto theft, promotion of a dangerous drug and possession of drug paraphernalia. His bail was set at $250,000.

Police officers were attempting to stop the suspect, who was speeding on South King Street in a stolen car, when he turned into the Tersoro gas station on Punahou Street near Washington Middle School.

The suspect tried to flee on foot, but got back into his car when he saw police officers.

When the suspect tried to drive away he dragged one of the arresting police officers, police said.

The officer did not need medical treatment, police said.

While attempting to flee, the suspect’s vehicle hit two other vehicles on Punahou Street.

A female passenger with Higgins was arrested on suspicion of auto theft and has not been charged.
