A large truck carrying 20 55-gallon drums and 12 30-gallon drums overturned on Highway 190 near Waikoloa Thursday afternoon, blocking both lanes of the road and spilling fluids on the road, Hawaii County firefighters reported.

The accident happened just after 3 p.m. near the 15 mile marker.

The driver escaped without injuries.

Firefighters used absorbent material to soak up the fluids on the road and entered the truck container to secure the leaking drums.

Police routed traffic through Kaiminani Drive and Waikoloa Road and reopened the road more than five hours later.
