Maui police arrest Wailuku man in connection with fatal hit-and-run
Maui police have arrested a 41-year-old Wailuku man in connection with a hit-and-run collision that killed a 51-year-old Kihei woman.
The crash occurred at 11:13 p.m. Tuesday on Piilani Highway. Police said Viki Deardorff was walking along the highway when the truck struck her. The driver fled the scene. Deardorff was pronounced dead at the scene.
The man turned himself in Friday at the Wailuku Police Station. He was arrested and later released pending further investigation.
Police said the Vehicle Homicide Unit went to his home, but no one had answered the door. They returned after he turned himself in and seized a bronze 2012 Toyota Tacoma as evidence.
Maui police had issued a request earlier this week for the public’s help in finding the truck.
Deardorff’s death marked the sixth traffic fatality on Maui in 11 days and the ninth death this year compared to four at the same time last year.
