Kapaa man found guilty of sex assault of minor
A Kapaa man pleaded no contest to sexually assaulting a minor and is scheduled to be sentenced on Aug. 7, Kauai County officials said in a news release.
Joseph Kalani Contrades, 37, was found guilty of continuous sexual assault of a minor under the age of 14 years, and two counts of sexual assault in the first degree on Monday.
Contrades was charged via family court complaint for multiple offenses stemming from separate incidents that took place from August 2013 until the date of his arrest on Feb. 26.
He is scheduled to be sentenced on Aug. 7. Contrades could be sentenced to a maximum of 20 years for each count.
But under a plea agreement, prosecutors will request that the 20-year maximum terms run concurrently, and to dismiss the remaining charges. The Hawaii Paroling Authority will set the minimum sentence that he must serve before he is eligible for parole.
Contrades is in custody at Kauai Community Correctional Center.
