Early walk-in voting sites closed early Thursday on Hawaii island as heavy rains and strong winds from Hurricane Iselle approached the island’s eastern coast.  

Officials confirmed the island’s four walk-in polling sites closed at noon. No other islands reported similar closures, carrying out early voting until the scheduled 4 p.m. closing time Thursday.

At a news conference earlier Thursday, state Attorney General David Louie said his office was in contact with the Office of Elections, National Weather Service and state Civil Defense, and was preparing to carry out the primary election as planned on Saturday.

“So any adjustments that need to be made will be made as we go forward,” Louie said. “But right now, the election is going forward as planned.”

Candidates in heated races are suspending campaign activities, including a Democratic rally.

Gov. Neil Abercrombie and U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa, both in the final days of tight races, asked supporters to take down campaign signs so they don’t become dangerous projectiles. Kathryn Xian, who’s running for Congress, suspended campaign activities and her volunteers focused on driving homeless people to shelters.

“I can assure you, as governor, that all campaign hats are off,” Abercrombie said in a press conference Wednesday. “We are dealing solely and with the question of the health and safety of the people of Hawaii.”
