No. 25 Arizona State sweeps No. 17 Hawaii
Junior hitter Macey Gardner put down 16 kills and No. 25 Arizona State upset No. 17 Hawaii 25-21, 25-23, 25-23 late Saturday night in the Chevron Rainbow Wahine Invitational volleyball tournament at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Gardner finished with a double-double when adding 10 digs and sophomore hitter McKenzie Willey had nine kills for the Sun Devils (2-0), who have all but clinched the title of the round-robin event. ASU plays Ohio (1-1) at 3 p.m. Sunday.
Hawaii (1-1) faces San Diego State (0-2) in the 5:30 p.m. finale. The Aztecs lost earlier Saturday to Ohio, 23-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-22.
The Wahine were led by junior hitter Tai Manu-Olevao’s nine kills and 12 digs. Freshman hitter Kalei Greeley came off the bench in Set 2 to finish with six kills.
“”We frittered away too many points,” UH coach Dave Shoji said. “The important thing is to bounce back tomorrow.”
Manu-Olevao will sit out Sunday’s match due to religious beliefs. Shoji said.Greeley will start in her spot.
