A 42-year-old Honolulu man died Saturday after running into trouble while diving off Lanai, Maui County officials said.

He was identified Sunday as Frank Pablo.

Police said Pablo was diving with a friend in the bay at the end of Lapaiki Trail just after 10 p.m. when the friend found him floating unconscious in the water.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was performed on shore, police said.

Then Pablo was taken up the trail toward responding rescue crews, who transported him to Lanai Community Hospital. Despite life-saving efforts at the hospital, he died.

An autopsy will be conducted.
