Maui girl died in locked car with no door handles

WAILUKU >> Maui police say a 4-year-old girl died after being found in a locked car with all inside door handles missing.

Police identified the girl as Kaiohu Kapu. She was found last month in the car outside a Lahaina apartment complex.

The Maui News reported Thursday that one of her parents found her lying face down on the floor of the back seat of the car.

Police say Kaiohu and her family returned from a trip to the beach and she took a nap with a parent.

The parent told police the girl woke up and likely went to the car to get her blanket.

She was pronounced dead at a hospital. A final autopsy report is pending.

Police say the parent purchased the car with the inside handles already missing.
