Ex-Molokai school clerk sentenced for $12K theft

WAILUKU >> A former clerk at a Molokai charter school can avoid prison for stealing from the school if she gets a job and can start paying the money back.

A Maui Circuit Court judge this week sentenced Sonja Domingo to five years of probation for stealing about $12,000 from Kualapuu Public Charter School.

The state attorney general’s office says that as a condition of her probation, she’ll have to serve about three months in prison if she doesn’t get a job within six months.

She pleaded guilty to three counts of theft. An internal school audit revealed she wasn’t depositing money she received from students and parents for meals, fundraisers and a book sale.

Her sentence also includes 350 hours of community service.
