Maui police  believe a 26-year-old driver of a Jeep Wrangler may have been speeding Sunday when he lost control of his vehicle and hit a tree in Haiku.

The accident occurred at 4:20 p.m. on West Kuiaha Road, about seven-tenths of a mile north of Kaupakalua Road.

Maui police said the driver failed to make a right turn and lost control of his black, 1991 Jeep Wrangler.

He was not wearing a seatbelt, police said.

Paramedics took the driver to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.
