A tourist from Kansas died Wednesday after getting into trouble in the ocean off Kihei, Maui, police said.

An autopsy will be performed on the victim, Michael R. Higgins, 57, of Lenexa, Kans., to determine the cause of death.

Police, firefighters and medics responded to a 12:12 p.m. call of a man unresposive in the ocean at Keawekapu Beach Park.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was administered at the scene, and Higgins was transported in critical condition to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
