No shark sightings have been observed at Hanalei Bay on Kauai Tuesday but north shore beaches remain closed on Kauai because of high surf conditions.

No swimming is advised at all of Kauai’s north shore beaches from Hanalei Pavilion to Kee Beach due to dangerous ocean conditions, according to ocean safety officials.

A high surf advisory remains in effect for all north and west-facing shores for Kauai and Niihau until 6 p.m. today.

Lifeguards initially closed Hanalei Bay to beachgoers Monday after a shark encounter.

At about 1 p.m., a six-to-eight foot hammerhead shark was observed approximately 30 yards off of Waioli Beach Park, also known as Pine Trees. Before lifeguards could clear everyone out of the water, a surfer reported the shark hit his board off of the Hanalei Pavilion.

Ocean safety officials said the surfer was not injured and his board was not damaged.

Lifeguards posted signs warning the public about the shark sighting and to stay out of the water until further notice.
