No. 5 Stanford beats Rainbow Wahine basketball team 86-73

Stanford solved its shooting struggles of the opening day of the Waikiki Beach Marriott Rainbow Wahine Shootout to hold off the University of Hawaii women’s basketball team 86-73 on Saturday at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Stanford guard Lili Thompson shot 6-for-7 from 3-point range on her way to a game-high 26 points and the fifth-ranked Cardinal (4-2) rebounded from Friday’s loss to North Carolina.

After shooting 31 percent from the field in the loss to UNC, Stanford shot 57.4 percent against the Rainbow Wahine and went 12-for-18 from beyond the arc before a late afternoon crowd of 1,383 at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Stanford guard Amber Orrange added 19 points and eight assists.

UH forward Shawlina Segovia hit four 3-pointers and led four UH players in double figures with 17 points. Destiny King finished with 13 and Ashleigh Karaitiana and Morgan Mason scored 11 each.

UH (4-2) closes the tournament against North Carolina on Sunday.

The Rainbow Wahine went on a 8-0 run early on and led with 26-25 after Mason hit both ends of a 1-and-1 with 7:07 left in the half.

With King and Shawna-Lei Kuehu on the bench with two fouls each, the Cardinal broke away with a 20-4 surge sparked by three Thompson 3-pointers.

Thompson had just two points before hitting two free throws with 5:39 left in the half. She knocked down 3-pointers on the next two possessions to give Stanford a 35-26 cushion.

Bonnie Samuelson hit a deep 3 from the right wing and drained another to beat the shot clock with three seconds left in the half to send the Cardinal into the break with a 48-34 lead.

UH closed to within six on twice in the second half, cutting the Stanford lead to 62-56 on Sarah Toeaina’s 3-pointer with 11:03 left.

But the Cardinal answered and maintained control the rest of the way.

Kuehu left the game with about 17 minutes left in the game and spent the rest of the game on the bench with ice on her left knee.

Prairie View A&M guard Jeanette Jackson went 16-for-22 from the free-throw line and scored a game-high 24 points for the Panthers, who shot 19.6 percent (10-for-51) from the field.
