High surf warning in effect for most isles

TERENCE REIS / SPECIAL TO THE STAR-ADVERTISER
An early morning surfer went head over heels at the Banzai Pipeline on Wednesday.

A high surf warning is in effect for the north and west shores of most islands until 4 p.m. Thursday, the National Weather Service said.

A large northwest swell is expected to generate 20 to 30-foot surf on the north and west-facing shores of Niihau and Kauai and the north-facing shores of Oahu, Molokai and Maui.  Surf is expected to grow to 20 to 25-feet on Thursday.

The west-facing shores of Oahu and Molokai will see waves from 15 to 20-feet Wednesday night and 12 to 18-feet on Thursday, forecasters said.
