Police charged a 48-year-old Wailuku man with terroristic threatening after he allegedly waved a sword and pellet rifle and threatened to kill police officers and others at a residence on Maui.

James Fairbanks was charged with three counts of first-degree terroristic threatening, abuse of a family/household member and resisting arrest and was being held in lieu of $18,000 bail.

At about 7:32 p.m. Thursday, police responded to an abuse call. When officers arrived, Fairbanks went to his room and refused to come out.

Police said Fairbanks brandished what appeared to be a sword and pellet rifle and challenged officers to enter his room. He also made several threats to kill the officers and others at the residence, according to a news release from the Maui Police Department.

Crisis negotiators arrived on scene and brought the situation to a peaceful resolution, police said.
