Fire that threatened Kauai homes under control

Firefighters gained control of a large Anahola brush fire that broke out off Kukuihale Road shortly after 8 p.m. Monday.

Strong winds blew the flames dangerously close to homes, but firefighters were able to protect the properties, a Kauai County spokeswoman said.

Firefighters from stations from Kaiakea to Kalaheo and the Lihue Airport remained on scene Tuesday morning until the fire was fully extinguished.

Local residents also helped control the fire by providing heavy equipment.

Fire inspectors will view the area after sunrise to try and determine the cause of the fire and give an estimate on how many acres burned.
