Hilo man charged after trying to stab and run over another man
A 35-year-old Hilo man was charged with attempting to stab and run down a man on New Year’s Day with his sports utility vehicle.
John Gouveia was charged with three counts of first-degree terroristic threatening Friday. His bail was set at $30,000. He remained in the cellblock pending his initial court appearance on Monday.
South Hilo Patrol officers responded to the 800 block of Kaiwiki Road in Hilo at 1:40 a.m. Thursday and found the suspect brandishing a hunting knife and attempting to stab a 43-year-old Hilo man. The suspect then reportedly attempted to run into the victim with his sports utility vehicle.
When two neighbors, a 28-year-old man and a 35-year-old man, went to investigate, the suspect reportedly tried to hit them with the SUV.
Police arrested Gouveia a short time later off Wainaku Street.
