Friends and family members create a makeshift memorial on Farrington Highway and Kealanani Avenue for the 18-year-old victim.

An 18-year-old Kapolei man was killed Saturday when he lost control of his car in an early morning accident in Kapolei.

Police said the man was driving a Toyota Corolla in the southwest direction on Farrington, 98 feet from Kealanani Avenue at about 3:56 a.m. when he lost control of the vehicle.

The car climbed the sidewalk on the south side of Farrington, hit a tree and a rock wall before finally stopping on the highway.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, despite efforts by paramedics to revive him, according to an Emergency Medical Services report.

Police said speed appears to have contributed to the crash.

This was Oahu’s sixth traffic fatality compared to three last year at the same time.

Traffic on Farrington Highway was closed in both directions until about 7 a.m.
