Woman critically injured in Kauai crash caused by wrong-way driver
A 28-year-old female visitor was flown by medical helicopter Wednesday to the Queen’s Medical Center from Kauai, where she was critically injured in a two-car collision in Kipu.
Kauai police said the crash occurred at about 8 a.m. after a Ford Ranger pickup truck, heading westbound on Kaumualii Highway, crossed the center line.
Police said the driver of an eastbound car swerved to avoid the pickup, but it broadsided the passenger side of the Chevy Sparks sedan, which rolled onto its side. Firefighters extricated the 28-year-old woman, who was a passenger in the Sparks, before she was transported to Wilcox Memorial Hospital.
She was later medivaced to Queen’s in critical condition. The 44-year-old driver of the truck was taken to Wilcox in stable condition. The 26-year-old male driver of the sedan was uninjured.
Police shut down the highway for an hour until 9:10 a.m., when all lanes were reopened.
