Waves of 25 to 35 feet prompt high surf warning

Surf, building to 25 to 35 feet on north shores, is expected to arrive Monday and peak Tuesday, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a high surf warning.

The warning is in effect for north and west shores of Oahu, Kauai County and Molokai, and north shores of Maui, from noon Monday until 6 p.m. Wednesday.

“In addition to the large swell, strong southwest to west winds will cause extremely rough conditions across most of these same beaches through tonight,” forecasters said in a warning message Monday.

North shore surf of 6 to 9 feet Monday, will reach wave heights of 25 to 35 feet Monday night and Tuesday, forecasters said. West shores will see waves of 4 to 6 feet rise to 15 to 25 feet Monday night and Tuesday.

“These dangerous conditions mean that only highly experienced persons should enter the water. Inexperienced persons should remain off beaches and adjacent beachfront area. Large breaking surf, significant shorebreak and dangerous currents make entering the water very hazardous. Anyone entering the water could face significant injury or death,” forecasters said.
