Former House Rep. Mele Carroll dies
Former state House Representative Diana “Mele” Carroll, who was elected to six terms in the state House of Representatives and served as chairwoman of the Human Services Committee, died at 3:50 a.m. Wednesday. She was 50.
Carroll resigned from the House Feb. 1 due to complications arising from her cancer treatments.
Carroll was honored during emotional remarks on the Senate floor today by senators who have known her and her family for years. State Sen. Gil Kahele, a longtime friend of the family, described leaving a Valentine’s Day message for Carroll telling her he loved her.
“It was sad, but I also know that she’s with her Dad,” Kahele said, his voice breaking with emotion.
Carroll represented the 13th House District that includes East Maui, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe and Molokini.
“It is a very sad day for the House,” said Speaker Joseph M. Souki. “Mele brought to the Legislature a vigorous desire to serve and deep love for Maui, Molokai and Lanai and Hawaii in general. She will be greatly missed by everyone here at the Capitol. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family.”
