Pepperdine scores big late to win series against Hawaii
Brad Anderson put Hawaii away with a three-run homer and Pepperdine scored eight times after the sixth inning in a 10-5 win over the Rainbow Warriors on Sunday at Eddy D. Field Stadium in Malibu, Calif.
Jeremy Goldenetz and Aaron Barnett each had two hits and scored twice for the Waves (7-5), who outscored Hawaii (5-8) 28-6 over the final three games of the series.
Kyle Von Ruden (1-1) allowed one earned run on five hits in five innings to take the loss. He was hit by a ball on his foot in the fourth inning and came out after the fifth at only 73 pitches.
Pepperdine took a 6-1 lead with four runs in the seventh when Hawaii mounted a comeback. Five straight Rainbows reached base in the top of the eighth and UH had the bases loaded with nobody out trailing 6-3. Alex Sawelson hit a sacrifice fly and Jonathan Weeks hit a two-out RBI single to make it a one-run game before Jacob Sheldon-Collins bounced into a fielder’s choice with the tying run on third.
Pepperdine put it away in the ninth as Juliene Jones allowed three Waves to reach to load the bases with one out. Matt Valencia came in and got a grounder to first. Hawaii got the out at second but Barnett beat the throw at first to avoid the inning-ending double play.
Anderson followed with his second homer of the series to ice the game for Pepperdine.
