Kauai police search for driver in hit-and-run accident
Kauai police officers are looking for the driver of a pickup truck who allegedly left the scene of a traffic accident that seriously injured a motorcyclist fronting the Wailua Golf Course.
The motorcyclist was transported to Wilcox Hospital with serious injuries and then airlifted to Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu.
The driver of the dark-colored pickup truck did not stop at the scene of the accident that occurred at about 8 a.m. Thursday on Kuhio Highway, police said.
Police said the motorcyclist, 25, of Kapaa was headed south following the pickup truck on the lane closer to the centerline and swerved to the outside lane to try to pass the truck. Witnesses said the pickup truck also moved into that lane, causing the motorcyclist to lose control and strike a guardrail along the southbound shoulder, police said. Police are still investigating whether the truck hit the motorcycle.
The motorcyclist was wearing a helmet.
Police said the accident created severe traffic delays and that the highway was reopened at 12:45 p.m.
