Virginia Tech edges UH softball team 1-0
Virginia Tech catcher Katey Smith’s home run to lead off the sixth inning proved to be the difference in the Hokies’ 1-0 win over the University of Hawaii softball team on Saturday in the Hawaii Pacific Health Rainbow Wahine Classic.
UH sophomore Kanani Aina Cabrales was locked in a scoreless duel with Virginia Tech ace Maggie Tyler through five innings before Smith jumped on the first pitch in the sixth to deliver the decisive blast to left field.
UH put the tying run on base in the sixth and seventh innings, but a double play ended the sixth and Tyler struck out the side in the seventh after Leisha Li’ili’i’s leadoff single.
Tyler, who struck out 12 in Virginia Tech’s 3-1 win over UH on Thursday, finished with 11 in Saturday’s shutout.
Aina Cabrales gave up six hits, walked none and struck out two in the loss.
Virginia Tech (21-3) completed a 5-0 run in the tournament and the Hokies gave up just two runs during their stay in Hawaii.
