Raw sewage spills at Maui County treatment facility
About 11,500 gallons of raw sewage spilled Tuesday at the Lahaina Wastewater Reclamation Facility because of a mechanical failure.
The overflow started at 8 a.m. and was stopped by 8:20 a.m., county officials said.
Sewage flowed from the headworks building to an adjacent grassy area at the facility, officials said. The spill was contained within the facility.
The spill did not reach any waterway and no beach closures were required.
A county wastewater crew cleaned and disinfected the affected area, 3300 Lower Honoapiilani Road, Lahaina.
The county notified the state Department of Health of the spill.
