Hotel offers carmegeddon discount

Ala Moana Hotel is offering a special rate on Wednesday for those seeking to avoid crawling through another night of poor traffic conditions in Honolulu.

Since thousands of commuters sat in traffic for hours on Tuesday and traffic is expected to remain heavy on Wednesday, the hotel is offering a $119 rate for single or double occupancy in the Kona Tower.

Marty Milan, director of sales and marketing for Ala Moana Hotel, said the discount was inspired by Tuesday’s traffic, which caused about 100 guests to make walk-in arrangements.

"Boy did we have a lot of walk-in guests," Milan said. "On a normal night, we’ll get maybe 20 to 25 people. But after speaking with some of our employees, who didn’t’ get home until after midnight, it was understandable that some people would try to avoid that situation."

Upon hearing that the bad traffic would continue, Milan said hotel management decided to offer a one-day hardship discount.

"We wanted to help people out," Milan said. "It’s about a savings of $50 over our normal costs."

Reservations for the "Off Road Rate" will be taken by phone only and the deal cannot be combined with other offers. For reservations, call (808) 955-4811 and ask for the front desk. Rooms are subject to availability.
