HANA, Maui >>A 50-foot fishing vessel ran aground off Hana Friday evening.

The Maui Fire Department said the two men on board were not injured.

Firefighters were initially dispatched to help with a vessel taking on water about 20 yards off Koki beach Friday evening. When they arrived, they saw the ship Mokulele rocking back and forth in shallow water.

The men on board were from Makawao. They had spent the day fishing and were returning to Maalaea harbor.

The fire department says the vessel has about 100 gallons of diesel on board. It’s not clear if the hull was breached, but fire crews smelled a strong odor of diesel in the air.

The Coast Guard has been notified and is discussing environmental concerns and removal with the owner.
