The city and state are losing more than $6,000 a day following the shutdown of a major parking concessionaire.
Hawaii News Now reports that Moana Parking Management LLC filed in Delaware bankruptcy on Friday. The company controlled parking lot pay stations at the Honolulu Zoo, Pali Lookout, Diamond Head Crater and Akaka Falls on the Big Island.
The city said it receives more than $500,000 per year in revenue from the zoo parking lot.
For now, “out of order” signs are attached to meters in the locations and parking is free.
State Parks Administrator Dan Quinn said his agency’s priority right now is to manage crowds and keep people safe.
It could be weeks before the city and state are able to negotiate a new emergency contract.
