Artist Margaret Keane, the former Hawaii resident famous for her haunting portraits of children with large, round eyes, is recuperating at home in Napa, Calif., after injuring her head in a fall last week, according to her daughter.

The 87-year-old Keane fell April 14, said Jane Swigert.

“She blacked out and fell and hit her head on the tile floor,” Swigert said. “She got a really bad head injury. She was in the hospital for three days but she is home now.”

Keane was the focus of “Big Eyes,” the Tim Burton-directed film about her life that was released in 2014. Some of it was shot in Hawaii, where Keane painted for 27 years before moving to Napa. Actress Amy Adams won a Golden Globe for her portrayal of the artist.

The film was released last week on DVD.

Keane’s prognosis is good, said Robert L. Brown, executive director of Keane Eyes Gallery in San Francisco.

“She is conversant and beginning to be argumentative so everyone thinks she will be OK,” he said. “When you are feisty and tell people where to go, you have your faculties about you.”
