Pets, staff evacuated after fire breaks out at Aikahi shopping center
Thirty firefighters and eight fire companies responded to a two-alarm fire early Thursday morning in the kitchen of the L&L Hawaiian Barbeque in the Aikahi Shopping Center in Kailua.
Five businesses, including an animal hospital, are in the building where the fire broke out at about 3:14 a.m.
Firefighters arrived at 3:18 a.m. and saw smoke and flames coming from the building at the 25 Kaneohe Bay Drive center. Firefighters brought the flames under control at 3:34 a.m. and extinguished the fire at 4:54 a.m.
Staff and animals in the veterinary clinic next door evacuated without harm to people or pets.
Damage to the building and its contents is estimated at $400,000.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
