Police, Public Safety Department investigate inmate assault

A 41-year-old inmate at Oahu Community Correctional Center was allegedly assaulted by other inmates Sunday and was taken to a hospital.

Both police and the Department of Public Safety are investigating the incident.

Prison officials said they are trying to determine how many inmates were involved in the assault.

The inmate, who suffered head, body and leg injuries, was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center following the incident at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, treated and returned to OCCC about 4 p.m.

The Department of Public Safety said the inmate was awaiting trial for abuse, driving without a license, driving with a suspended license and contempt.

The inmate is now housed in another part of the Kalihi facility, the Department of Public Safety said.
