Electrical short blamed for high-rise fire in Ala Wai condo

An electrical short caused a small fire in the eighth floor of a high-rise condominium on University Avenue early Friday morning, a Honolulu Fire Department spokesman said..

Fire officials said neighbors helped extinguish the fire in a closet of a bedroom in one of the 206 units in the 38-floor Ala Wai Plaza Skyrise condominium at 555 University Avenue.

The fire was reported at 12:44 a.m. and brought under control 21 minutes after firefighters arrived. The fire was contained to the bedroom.

Damage was estimated at $2,000.

Twenty-two firefighters responded to the alarm.
