Kailua-Kona woman injured in moped-truck crash dies
A Kailua-Kona woman injured Tuesday in a crash between a moped and a dump truck hauling a trailer died Wednesday at the Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu.
Mokihana Choy, 29, was airlifted from Hawaii island to Queen’s after the collision on Queen Kaahumanu Highway near Hualalai Road in Kailua-Kona.
About 10 a.m. Tuesday, the moped was merging onto the southbound lane of Queen Kaahumanu Highway from Hualalai Road, when it wound up between the dump truck and the trailer it was pulling, police said. The trailer ran over the moped, which was carrying the operator and Choy. Neither rider was wearing a helmet.
The operator of the moped, a 21-year-old Kailua-Kona man, remains at Kona Community Hospital in stable condition.
Police have reclassified the case from a negligent injury to a negligent homicide. The investigation continues.
The operator of the dump truck was not injured.
