Firefighters battle Waimalu wildfire; no homes threatened
A Hawaiian Electric Co. contractor started a wildland fire Thursday that burned about three acres above a residential area in Waimalu, a Honolulu Fire Department spokesman said.
The contractor was removing a high-voltage transmission tower when the fire started about 12:10 p.m. near the end of Kaahumanu Street, said HFD Capt. David Jenkins.
Jenkins said workers were posted to watch for fire hazards and the contractor tried to extinguish the blaze with fire extinguishers.
A HECO-contracted helicopter for the tower work assisted firefighters with aerial observation of the fire, and a second helicopter was called in by HECO and made water drops.
“(The helicopters) were greatly appreciated,” Jenkins said. “It was very helpful in a quick stop to that fire.”
Thirty-four firefighters from nine companies responded and brought the fire under control by 2:15 p.m. One firefighter sustained a minor ankle injury during the incident, Jenkins said.
