A water main break on 10th Avenue in Palolo created a sinkhole that swallowed a pickup truck Thursday morning.

Board of Water Supply crews completed repairs to a 16-inch water main that broke in Palolo Thursday morning, creating a sinkhole that swallowed a pickup truck.

Water service was restored to about 23 homes cut off by the break by about 6:30 a.m. And 10th Avenue near Hinahina Street was reopened at 5:30 p.m. after a paving contractor was able to fill in the hole and repave the road.

The 16-inch cast iron pipe that broke was installed in 1964 and is scheduled to be replaced, the Board of Water Supply said.

The homeowner who lives near the break said it was the second time in a year that the main broke, damaging his property.
