A 20-year-old Kailua-Kona man hospitalized with a laceration to his forearm after a June 21 domestic dispute died of his injuries on Sunday.

Ezra Barro was pronounced dead at 4:44 a.m. Sunday at Kaiser Medical Center on Oahu, Hawaii island police said in a press release.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s office will conduct an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. The case, which was being handled as a first-degreee assault, is now being investigated as a manslaughter.

Police released without charges an 18-year-old Kailua-Kona woman who was arrested early Monday after the domestic dispute sent Barro to the hospital in critical condition. A second abuse investigation was initiated with the woman as the victim.

At 10:05 p.m. Sunday, June 31, Kona patrol officers were at Kona Community Hospital for an unrelated case when the man arrived in a private vehicle and was taken to the emergency room.

Investigation revealed that he had received the injury during a domestic altercation at a home on Awakea Street in Kailua-Kona.
