SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. » Four children of a woman who was killed when an ice cave collapsed in Washington state became orphans after their father was shot and killed in Southern California.

The San Bernardino Sun reports the children, who range in age from 1 to 14, were vacationing with their mother, her boyfriend and brother on July 6 when the accident occurred at the Big Four Ice Caves.

Six days later, they lost their father after he was fatally shot outside a San Bernardino bar.

Police said 35-year-old Adrian Martinez Cardona left the bar after getting into an argument and was shot as he stood outside near his car.

No other details were released.

A relative said Cardona was trying to get to the children in the days before his death.
