A private rail contractor will repair the break in a 24-inch water line that it broke Tuesday on Kamehameha Highway near the Aloha Stadium while it was doing utilities relocation work.
The break was reported to Navy engineers at 9:15 a.m. by Kiewit Infrastructure West Co., a rail construction contractor.
Only an isolated area was affected — Richardson Pool, which is currently closed, and an office, the Navy said. Housing areas and Schooners Restaurant were not affected.
The 24-inch waterline is approximately four-feet deep, was installed in the late 1990s and was not encased in concrete.
The cause of the break is believed to have been movement of a pipe joint during work by the contractor. The Navy does not plan to conduct an investigation.
After the contractor completes repairs, the Navy will disinfect the new re-routed section of waterline, and then Navy engineers will slowly open up the valves to recharge the system.
