A magnitude-6.6 earthquake struck near the Solomon Islands on Friday evening. The strong quake did not trigger a tsunami threat to Hawaii.

A strong earthquake struck near the Solomon Islands on Friday evening but did not trigger any tsunami warnings for Hawaii.

The preliminary magnitude 6.6 quake hit at 9:47 p.m. Hawaii time 133 miles west of Lata, Solomon Islands, at depth of 3.9 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey website.

No injuries were immediately reported.
